OPINION: Protect Access is Key to Health Care
Access to affordable and reliable medical services is key to any conversation surrounding health care in 2019. With a rise of rural hospital closures, the care Louisianans rely on is moving further away from them each year.
Knowing that, is it concerning that Congress is considering legislation that could actually further limit access to quality, lifesaving services. The Lower Health Care Costs Act being considered in Washington does more harm than good when it comes to our health care system.
At first glance, the Lower Health Care Costs Act addresses a critical problem: surprise billing. When a patient uses a service like an air ambulance, there are situations where insurers do not cover the costs, sometimes leaving patients with an unexpected, hefty medical bill. I think we can all agree that is a practice that should cease.
Unfortunately, in an attempt to address this issue, the current proposal makes the challenge of providing rural health care worse. By setting a rate of reimbursement, the legislationdiscourages fair in-network agreement between insurers and air ambulance companies. Left without the funds needed to cover their operating costs, air ambulances would like close. A patientmight avoid a bill, but they will also lose access the emergency health care they rely on in the direst situations.
This is not a tradeoff we should have to make. Let’s find a solution that protects patients from surprise bills and protects their access to quality health care.

What a way to start the weekend. Stopped for gas in Houma on the way back to New Iberia after work and walked in to the store and onto a guy overdosing on drugs in the Subway next door. Houma PD was already on scene and administered Narcan and the guy had an open airway by the time AASI arrived.
This is just another reason why I am proud of our Attorney General. Jeff was able to get Narcan for first responders to use and this saved this guy’s life.
The opioid problem is very prevalent here in our state. Talk to your kids!!!!

LAGOP: Edwards Skips Oil and Gas Event to Beg Socialist “Green New Deal” Supporters for Campaign Cash
Baton Rouge, LA – Today, the Louisiana Oil and Gas Association (LOGA) and the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association (LMOGA) will hold the first Southern Energy Conference in Lafayette. The event includes a gubernatorial candidate forum, for which the hosts issued an invitation to Governor John Bel Edwards to participate in May – nearly four months in advance.
The oil and gas industry is the largest employer in Louisiana, responsible for over 250,000 direct and indirect jobs and over $2 billion in yearly tax revenue.
But Edwards won’t be there to articulate his vision for the future of the industry that employs more people in Louisiana than any other – or to answer questions about his support for frivolous lawsuits against energy companies that benefit his trial lawyer cronies and kill Louisiana jobs.
Why? He’ll be in Atlanta raising campaign cash from supporters of far-left extremists like Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). Warren has promised a moratorium on all new offshore leases and is a co-sponsor of the “Green New Deal” pushed by socialist Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which would destroy Louisiana’s energy industry.
Former Georgia Democratic Governor Roy Barnes, a host of the fundraiser, has donated to Warren, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, and Hillary Clinton.
Another host, Keith Mason, gave $100,000 to the Hillary Victory Fund in 2016.
“Our economy runs on oil and gas,” explained LAGOP Executive Director Andrew Bautsch. “Green New Deal supporting socialists like John Bel Edwards and Elizabeth Warren are destroying Louisiana jobs!”
At least the people of Louisiana will know where their governor is and what he’s doing when he travels out of state this time. Edwards’ out-of-state trips are typically shrouded in secrecy, including as recently as yesterday when his office refused to tell reporters what he was up to in Houston.
This follows a pattern of Edwards refusing to answer questions and hiding basic information about trips to out-of-state locations including New York City, California, and the Kentucky Derby from the media and the public.
After Rispone Decided to Go After Fellow Republican, Cajun Conservatism Endorses Ralph Abraham
In what has to be the absolute dumbest political move in the governor’s race thus far, Eddie Rispone’s campaign has decided to go the way of Jay Dardenne and Scott Angelle in the last election and attack a fellow Republican candidate. A piece that started running on television yesterday goes after Congressman Ralph Abraham on what can only be described as total irrelevant issues.
As a result, Cajun Conservatism will publicly endorse Ralph Abraham for governor. Congressman Abraham is a proven conservative with a record that reflects such.
Rispone should immediately pull the ad and issue a statement repudiating it. If not, it will only show that he is in bed with the Edwards campaign.

Medicare-for-all would wipe out the entire American insurance industry, taking with it all exchange plans and all employer and union-provided health care coverage. Half a million U.S. jobs would be eliminated.
But Pelosi, ultra-liberal that she is at heart, still craves "Medicare-for-all" as much as anyone. She just knows she’s going to have to be tricky to get it done.

LAGOP: Super PAC Supporting John Bel Edwards Fueled by Left-Wing Pro-Abortion and Anti-Gun Activist Groups
Baton Rouge, LA – The latest campaign finance report discloses that 79% of the money contributed to Gumbo PAC during the last reporting period came from two left-wing Washington D.C. based donors: The Democratic Governors Association (DGA) and The National Education Association (NEA).
This new report shows an additional $500,000 contribution to Gumbo PAC from the hyper-liberal DGA, bringing the total contributed by the DGA this cycle to $1 million.
The DGA, which spent millions to help elect Edwards in 2015, has had paid staffers on the ground to help his re-election efforts for months, funded in-part by the $570,780 incontributions from Planned Parenthood Action Fund between 2015-2018.
Both Planned Parenthood and the DGA actively campaign against pro-life legislationacross the country. Earlier this summer, the DGA sent out an email that opened with: “Friends, abortion rights are under attack in the states,” and tweeted that “attacks on women’s health care prove that the threat to women’s reproductive rights is real and present,” referencing legislation similar to Louisiana’s. Leading national Democrats including Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Tom Perez have called for the party to be “100 percent pro-choice.”
The DGA’s liberal pro-abortion stance is not their only controversial position that is too far left for Louisiana.
A few weeks after sending the latest $500,000 check to Team JBE, the DGA attacked the Second Amendment (and President Trump) in a letter demanding “red flag laws, passing universal background checks, outlawing assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and establishing stricter reporting requirements to prevent those deemed by a mental health professional to be a danger to themselves or others from purchasing a firearm.”
The other Washington D.C.-based liberal activist group supporting John Bel Edwards is the National Education Association (NEA). The latest campaign finance report shows a new $350,000 contribution to Gumbo PAC from the left-wing NEA.
Earlier this summer, the NEA adopted a new “business item” declaring “The NEA vigorously opposes all attacks on the right to choose and stands on the fundamental right to abortion under Roe v. Wade.”
Of course, that is not their only left-wing position that is out of sync with the vast majority of Louisiana citizens. Like the DGA, the NEA has also decided to disregard the Second Amendment and take a liberal position on gun control. “We believe assault weapons and high capacity magazines are weapons of war that belong only in the hands of our military and law enforcement officers.”
“John Bel’s campaign commercials say that he is pro-life and pro-gun, but this campaign finance report shows clearly that he is just another left-wing democrat,” said LAGOP Executive Director Andrew Bautsch. “If he really believed in protecting the right to life, if he really believed in protecting the Second Amendment, he would not accept this dirty money.

BRIGGS: Louisiana’s In A Crisis: Time to Demand a Plan

If ever there was a reason for voters to wake up and get to the polls this October, this is it. Hardworking Louisiana citizens are losing jobs, people are fleeing the state, and economic growth continues to lag behind the rest of the nation.
While lower taxes and less regulation have helped unleash the American workforce to create jobs and opportunity across the nation, people across the Pelican State continue to suffer.
To be blunt, we are in crisis.
Let’s talk first about jobs, one of the best indicators of a state’s health. We are losing jobs- a lot of them. From July 2018 to July 2019, Louisiana lost 1,000 jobs – the only state to lose jobs over that time period. Every job loss represents one fewer table that gets food put on it. It likely represents one more new Texas license plate.
Of the twelve southern states, Louisiana is the only one with a receding labor force. Mississippi, that’s right Mississippi, created 19,000 more jobs than we did in the last year according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Texas created 335,600 more jobs than the Pelican State. Meanwhile, leaders from Baton Rouge are strangling Louisiana’s energy sector and demonizing our industry job creators. A new national study by 24/7 Wall Street found Lafayette’s metro area, the heart of our oil and gas industry, had the nation’s third-highest loss of jobs over the past five years, a stark contrast to 106 consecutive months of U.S. job growth.
Bottom line: the Texodus is alive and well.
Then as we zero in to the specifics of Louisiana’s oil and gas industry, there’s no way to sugar coat it: we are experiencing historically low drilling activity. Five active rigs in South Louisiana? To put this in context, when the crash in the 80’s hit Louisiana hard, billboards in Acadiana read - “Last one to leave, turn out the lights.” South Louisiana had over 55 rigs - ten times that of today - active on land and inland waters.
As further evidence of the critical status of the industry in South Louisiana, this August’s state lease sale boasted a shocking total of zero bids. Zero. This is simply unacceptable. In fact, the past 5 lease sales have netted less than $1 million . This represents huge losses in revenue for our state, that likely will have to be made up through increased taxes or reductions in services. With the handcuffing of our energy sector, our communities are weakened and our state is weakened. Enough is enough.
The silver lining here is that we are at a crossroads. We have an opportunity in 2019 to change course, to bring back jobs and elect leaders that can help rebuild Louisiana’s oil and natural gas industry.
In addition to state lawmakers, we will also elect parish councilmen, school board members, sheriffs, and even a Supreme Court justice. But no single decision will impact our economic future more than the choice we will make for governor.
So please join me in calling on the candidates to provide a bold, ambitious plan to bring back jobs and unleash the power of our state’s bedrock industry.
It is our duty to hold those asking for our vote accountable for the well-being of our hardworking citizens that make up Louisiana’s economy. All you have to do is take the time to ask them about their position on specific policy solutions. Ask them: What’s your plan to resurrect Louisiana’s energy industry? How will you work to bring jobs and investments back to South Louisiana?
